So it begins, XFIT:2015 – The Empire

Jan 8th – Day 1: So the journey begins. This is like The Empire Strikes Back. We pick up after the conclusion of A New Hope. Order has been restored after the knee exploded in 2014. OK, too dramatic, after a tear and surgery to a minor piece of the knee. Let’s do this Empire year of 2015 and make sure to skip the part where the hero gets his hand cut off doing clean & jerks.

Orientation day at Fusion D1 Crossfit in Tualatin. I work with Raphael Pond who looks like he eats Ewoks for breakfast. Lots of trepidation and nervousness the past couple days leading up to this point. I explain my crossfit background, my injury-operation-PT/recovery, and game plan to ease into this by focusing on proper technique and lower weights in the first month. He walks me through the 4 basic movements. No weights on bars and I am feeling the burn 2/3 of the way through. Endorphins surging when I am done, I forgot how much I like this high. RP was great at correcting stances, evaluating movements, calling out my flexibility – or lack thereof. I walked out of Fusion D1 thinking I like the box, this coach, and a good feeling for things to come. I don’t know what I was truly concerned about, well I do, my irrational mind had visions of my knee caps flying off mid-squat ala some crazy WOD IED. So it begins, XFIT:2015 – The Empire.

Jan 12th: Pilates at Mentor. An hour of crunches and water-boarding. Getting better at it. I’ve been going for a month now. My balance is coming back quickly. Seems the operation took some of it out of me and worked at it in PT. I notice that even though I maintained my 262lb physique from injury to return to WODing, the muscles have somehow settled and slumped into my belly. Time to get them out of the torso and back into my legs / lats / bi’s & tri’s. Conviction & commitment to continue with Monday Pilates and Friday Core Strength while jumping back into CrossFit. A strong core will help to prevent injury and provide good form in exercise.

Jan 13th – I totally planned to go to the 6am class. Well, I didn’t prep my plan to work the plan. Lesson learned. Lay out your work out gear, get pre-post work-out supplements ready, and pack the office clothes THE NIGHT BEFORE. Meetings during the lunchtime so that is out and I really can’t afford to take a 2 hour lunch. Options left are 6pm or 7pm classes. I have all kinds of excuses by 3:40 why I will go tomorrow morning instead. Let me count thy ways. I was going to skip Wednesday so I’ll sub that for Tuesday. I’m tired. Beth is at Heather’s tonight and the kids would be home alone (as if that doesn’t already occur, officially the lamest excuse yet). My eyes are strained from mindless student registration and trading email all day. My stomach aches, damned espresso, why are you so good yet so hard on me? I have to cook dinner. Homework needs to be done. WTF, I sound like a pathetically out of shape middle aged grumpy old man. Oh wait…

Stay tuned to see if the devil or angel on my shoulders wins out today.
